‘Should I become an Entrepreneur?’
In year 2010, I was pondering upon this same question. I was at a cross-road of my life, deciding whether I want to continue climbing the Corporate ladder or should I start my own business and become an entrepreneur for the first time in my life.
Before that time, I have already been working in the Corporate world for years and have climbed my way up to a senior position in a multinational corporation… but I was time-broke, stressed out and burned out.
To say the least, I was less than happy.
At that time, the path of entrepreneurship was unknown to me. I didn’t have any prior entrepreneurship experience and I don’t know too many people within my network who have started and succeeded in their own businesses.
In Year 2011, I attended a seminar in Singapore. The speaker spoke about entrepreneurship and how starting a business could lead to a new and more fulfilling life. I couldn’t remember too much from that seminar now, but what stuck in my mind was a power point slide he shown in the seminar…
On that slide, it was BIG bold words that say, ‘If you want something you’ve never had, you’ve got to do something you’ve never done.’
Bang! Wow… isn’t this true?
‘It’s time for a change,’ I said to myself.
On August 23, 2011, I took a leap of faith and started my own home business. It didn’t know what to expect and what’s ahead of me. But I have decided to choose a different path for myself.
And as they said, the rest is history. You can read more about my story HERE.
Why Everyone Will Have To Become An Entrepreneur…
An entrepreneurial mindset is essential in today’s fast-changing business and economic environment. What worked in your grandparents’ generation will no longer work in today’s World.
In the Industrial Age, people used to work their whole lives in the same job because their job was ’secured’ and often offered pensions when they retired. In today’s Information Age, pensions are almost non-existent and jobs are much less ’secured’ than you think. Corporations often lay off employees as their business situation changes – regardless of how long the employees may have already served the company.
Have you heard of employees being laid off after serving the company for years or even decades? I certainly have…
With robots and AI (artificial intelligence) continue to develop, scientists claimed that some 5 million jobs will be replaced by robots by year 2020. The jobs most at risks of being replaced by machines are those in “administrative and routine white-collar office functions.” Furthermore, some industries where machines already play a large part, like manufacturing and production, will see further robot substitution.
By having an entrepreneurial mindset, you will be better prepared for your financial future and your family’s life.
The Forbes article, ’Why Everyone Will Have To Become an Entrepreneur’, explains,
’The fact is that the rate of change is only increasing. And the only thing you are able to count on when it comes to how you are going to make your living is you. That’s why you’d better be prepared to be an entrepreneur. In the best of worlds (i.e., you get to keep doing the job you currently like), you will gain new skills and new ways of thinking that will allow you to do your existing job better. And if the worst happens and the winds of change sweep you out the door, you will have a head start on whatever it is you do next. Either way, you need to be prepared to be an entrepreneur.’
Unlike employees, entrepreneurs don’t rely on the safety net of a pay check from someone else. They learn from their mistakes, are driven to solve problems, and get results no matter how much time or effort it takes.
As Robert Kiyosaki, author of # 1 best selling personal finance book, Rich Dad Poor Dad has said, ‘Traditional education and job security are the last thread of the industrial age. Their time is over.’
